The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Durban is a Cultural Centre of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), operating as part of the Consulate General of India, Durban since 1996. It promotes bilateral cultural linkages between India and South Africa across the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Free State.
Classes & Training
Yoga, Tamil language, Bharatanatyam dance and Carnatic Vocal Music with India-based Gurus and trainers. Yoga outreach classes at Ramakrishna Centre, Chamber of Commerce and Rippon Primary School.
Library
Large collection of books on Indian history, politics, economy, art, culture and cuisine. Extensive contemporary Indian literature section plus a wide collection of CDs on Indian music and films. Partially computerised.
Cultural Programmes
Celebrates Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Sardar Patel Jayanti, Constitution Day, International Yoga Day and Indian festivals. Supports community programmes across KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Free State.
Multipurpose Hall
The hall at SVCC is available for exhibitions, lectures and various cultural activities, and serves local music schools and religious organisations promoting Indian dance and music.
ICCR Scholarships
Coordinates ICCR Scholarships for deserving South African nationals at esteemed universities across India. Many alumni are now employed in large companies and IT firms.
SAIDA Alliance
Allied with local dance schools under the umbrella organisation SAIDA (South African Indian Dance Alliance) to sustain and grow Indian dance traditions in South Africa.
