The Rabindranath Tagore Center, Kolkata, the cultural flagship of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), was inaugurated on June 1, 2008 by Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the then Minister of External Affairs, in the presence of Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Karan Singh, President of ICCR, and other dignitaries. Rabindranath Tagore Center, Kolkata, is ICCR’s unique Center. It was originally designed by Charles Correa and later suitably revised and completed by architect, Dulal Mukherjee. A landmark building, the RTC with its state-of-the-art galleries, an auditorium with excellent acoustics, and a major conference Center with seminar and lecture rooms, fills an important need and has become the preferred destination for art lovers and culture enthusiasts in the city. These venues are also available to others for holding programmes. The centrally air-conditioned building, spread over four floors, with a pronounced glass roof atrium, houses the ICCR office and has four art galleries, and a souvenir shop. Within a short time, the RTC has become the cultural hub of Kolkata. It enables this culturally-vibrant city to appreciate a variety of international cultural events, which include art exhibitions, dance and musical performances, seminars, talks, workshops, and theatre. Additionally, in this one-stop cultural Center, one can browse through the gift shop, Kamala, with its choice selection of Indian handicrafts, and also savour the finest of Indian teas and delectable food at its Café Thé. The festival, Tagore Beyond Frontiers (Dec 4-6, 2009), had several academic sessions with international and national participants, cultural programmes including a fashion show on the Tagore sartorial style, a book fair and exhibitions on Tagore’s art, a photographic exhibition on his travels, as well as a painting exhibition by Italian artists inspired by his music.
