The Nehru-Wangchuck Cultural Centre at Thimphu, Bhutan, is a Cultural Centre of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations of India. It was inaugurated on 21st September 2010 by Dr. Karan Singh, the then President, Indian Council for Cultural Relations and His Excellency Lyonpo Minjur Dorji, the then Minister for Home and Cultural Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan.
The Centre promotes bilateral cultural linkages between India and Bhutan by organizing cultural programmes, cultural seminars, workshops and trainings engaging India based Gurus professionals and trainers for Yoga and Indian Classical Music. Other than the regular activities, exhibitions and performing art shows, the Centre also arranges art workshops, and drawing & painting competitions, seminars, lecture demonstrations and many more events. The Centre also screens documentaries twice a month.
The Centre also provides a platform, to the upcoming young Artists and Writers of Bhutan by exhibiting their works and launching their books.
The library of the centre has a well stocked collection of over 5000 books, covering a wide spectrum of subjects such as religion, art and culture, history, political affairs, fashion and fiction. It also has a reading room with latest magazines and newspapers and has a rich collection of CDs and DVDs.
The Centre has 1280 sq. feet area for display. Many important Exhibitions take place in the centre such as a Photographic Exhibition entitled “Buddhism in India” last held by a renowned Indian Photographer Shri Sondeep Shankar, an exhibition entitled, “Through the Lens of Time-Glimpses of the unseen images of Bhutanese Monarchs: by Royal Office for Media and His Majesties Secretariat” and Photo Exhibition titled “His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan and India’s Leadership”.
As a part of the celebrations of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi an exhibition of photographs titled “Mohan Se Mahatma Tak”, an essay competition on “What India Means to Me” and a photography contest on “ India though Bhutanese eyes” was conducted amongst the Bhutanese Nationals on Gandhi Jayanti day 2nd October 2018. The centre also launched “Vaishnav Jana Toh” Bhajan sung by Ms. Yangchen Drukpa, a Bhutanese Singer and released stamps to commemorate the occasion.
As the year 2018 marks the Golden Jubilee celebration of the establishment of the formal diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan, the centre also hosted several cultural and musical troupes from India such as popular musical band led by Ms. Shubhangi Joshi, Folk dances of North East India, Mosaic of classical dance forms of India, Sitar and slide Guitar group and Ghatam group.
The centre also celebrated its 8th Anniversary on 22nd September by hosting a musical troupe “Ghatam and other instruments” led and performed by women artists from India. Princess Sonam Dechen Wangchuck was the Chief Guest. Shri Jaideep Sarkar, Ambassador of India to Bhutan and other dignitaries of the Royal Govt. of Bhutan also attended the function.
The centre has also been closely associated with Mountain Echoes a Literary Festival. The Patron of Mountain Echoes is Her Majesty the Royal Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck.
The main activity area of the centre includes the Siddhartha Art Gallery, a Library and a Multi-Purpose and Yoga Hall.
