MACIC was inaugurated on 14th January 1992 and named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (1888–1958) — distinguished scholar, educationist, statesman, first Education Minister of India and founding President of ICCR. It embodies the spirit of the Cultural Agreement signed between India and Egypt in 1958, rooted in a civilisational friendship dating back to ancient times.
Classes & Training
Regular academic programmes in Hindi, Urdu and Indian dance forms. Seven active Yoga batches at MACIC. Monthly Indian film screenings at Hanager Theater, Cairo Opera House in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture.
India by the Nile
Annual Indian Cultural Festival billed as the biggest foreign cultural festival in Egypt, held across three cities. The 2018 edition ran for over two weeks featuring Indian cultural groups performing in various cities.
Youth & Outreach
Glimpses of India painting competition running for 24 years — 14,000 schoolchildren from 19 Governorates participated in 2018. Over 1,000 students from 27 schools visited MACIC in 2018–19 under the School Visit Programme.
Academic & Scholarship
Egyptian students benefit from ICCR scholarship schemes to study in India. ICCR Chair on Bioinformatics established at Ain Shams University in 2016. Regular MACIC Round-tables and seminars engaging youth, academia and civil society.
Yoga & Wellness
Yoga has gained significant popularity in Egypt with over 50 Yoga schools in Cairo. International Day of Yoga celebrated in Cairo, Ismailia and Alexandria. Interactive Ayurveda and alternative medicine sessions also conducted.
Gandhi & Heritage
Diverse programmes commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. India Days organised in Egyptian governorates and universities, celebrating the deep civilisational bonds between India and Egypt.
