The Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture (IGCIC) is the Cultural Wing of the High Commission of India in Mauritius, established in 1987 in Quatre Bornes and shifted to Phoenix. The IGCIC at Phoenix was inaugurated on 11th March 2000 by Late Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India, and Dr Navin Chandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius.
Classes & Training
Yoga, Hindi, Sanskrit, Hindustani Classical Vocal Music, Tabla and Kathak dance with India-based Gurus and professional trainers. Outreach programme where teachers visit schools and cultural organisations across Mauritius.
Library
Well-equipped library with books in English, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi covering Indian art, culture, music, dance, history and international relations. Reference section with encyclopedias, dictionaries, CDs and DVDs. Monthly free Indian cinema screenings.
Cultural Programmes
Celebrates Independence Day, Republic Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Hindi Diwas, International Yoga Day and Indian festivals including Mahashivaratri, Diwali, Milad-un-Nabi and Tamil New Year. Monthly Sahitya Sangoshthi and Kavi-Sammelans in Hindi.
World-Class Facilities
20,000 sq.m campus in a lush green layout reflecting Indian architecture. Auditorium (669 seats), multipurpose hall (250 seats), seminar room (100 seats), exhibition room, Ayush Cell (Ayurveda & Homeopathy) and residential quarters for Director and 8 teachers.
Community Partnerships
Associates with Mauritius-India Friendship Society, Hindi Speaking Union, Urdu Speaking Union and various socio-cultural institutions. Venue for Indian Women's Association, Indo-Mauritian Cultural organisations and the Indian Alumni Association.
Ayush Cell
A dedicated Ayush Information Cell offering Ayurveda and Homeopathy services, promoting India's traditional systems of medicine among the Mauritian community.
